On 29 April the fourth meeting of the European Union (EU) Council Working Party on Statistics during the Latvian Presidency was held in Brussels. The meeting agenda covered issues related to proposals of the Member States for the draft regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on harmonised indices of consumer prices[1].

The Commission submitted the draft regulation on harmonised indices of consumer prices to the Council on 9 December 2014, and its revision was launched during the Latvian Presidency. The draft regulation was discussed in the two previous meetings held on 18 February and 19 March.

During the meeting, agreement was reached on such important matters as data submission periodicity and deadlines, data exchange standards and revision process. The discussions also touched upon issues concerning definitions used in the draft regulation, where in most cases an agreement was reached.

The agreement is still pending on some articles of the regulation, such as certain definitions, comparability of harmonised indices and issues on data requirements. Member States have been asked to prepare their comments and proposals by 6 May. The next meeting will take place on 19 May, and the Latvian Presidency hopes to reach the general agreement on the draft regulation.

The Presidency Group also informed the delegates the on the current state of play of the open dossiers on balance of payments, rail transport, inland waterways and extrastat.
